Christmas on the Moon: A Poem

From up here the Earth looks cold
Though that's not necessarily true
It's summertime in half the world
But that little planet looks frosty white and blue
From our vantage point on the moon

In establishing our lunar colony
We had to be selective
In what we brought with us
Holidays take on a different perspective
We've become more introspective

There are a few things we've forgotten
No fireplaces to hold Christmas stockings
And we don't have the ingredients
For our traditional cookies and seasonal treats
There are no stores for holiday shopping

"Silent Night" takes on a new meaning
Since sound doesn't travel in outer space
And we miss the colorful lights
Blinking and twinkling all over the place
But we do our best at our moon base

We build a makeshift Christmas tree
With supplies we have on hand
It's the right shape and it stands
Even though it's not close to an evergreen
We've done all the decorating we can

We joke that Santa Claus is Ziggy Stardust
Coming to save the world with rock and roll
And the bad kids don't get coal
But the most annoying songs you can imagine
Played on repeat on the radio

Kidding aside, there's a moment of clarity
When we talk with sincerity
About the dream of universal peace
And the meeting of basic human needs
It seems an unbelievable reality

From up here the Earth looks small
But there are so many Christmas wishes
It's impossible to grant them all
We only hope each person below
Finds one little thing to make the day special

I hope you’ve enjoyed my 12 Days of Christmas series (though I didn’t run it on the traditional 12 Days of Christmas and missed a couple days). I had fun writing these little stories and hope they made your holiday a little brighter. I plan on putting most of these into a book for next Christmas and adding a few new pieces. Merry Christmas!
