Open Windows

The darker and more silent the night, 
the more I want to open the windows wide
and stand in the cold breeze
with a blanket tight across my shoulders,
my only sense of security.
As I get older, there’s no end
of things to surprise me on autumn nights,
and maybe that’s just what I need
to find my tenuous place beneath
this fathomless sky.
