Weight of Attention

Too often I've wished for attention
only to crumble under the weight of it
when anyone looks my way.
It's a heavy thing,
holding me in place.
It's a drug I crave
but it's laced with something
that makes my tongue numb
so the words don't come
and once again, I feel dumb,
disappointing everyone.
